Our Universe: The Known and The Unknown

Course Description: A scientific theory of the universe began to emerge about 100 years ago; it remains a work-in-progress. We explore many fascinating facts about our universe--its size, its age, what it contains, and of what it is made. What is expanding and what isn't, and what "Big Bang" and "expansion" really mean. Where did our universe come from? What is its future and how do we fit in? No prior scientific expertise required.

Classes will be recorded.

Most Important Concepts in this Course
  1.     Everything, however immense or minute, is intimately interconnected.
  2.     With only 17 particle types & 4 forces, the universe is comprehensible.
  3.     All we see is made from just 3 parts: protons, neutrons & electrons.
  4.     The unique properties of Light reveal the universe & all its part their Location, Composition, Motion, and Past.
  5.     Stars enable Life and make the universe beautiful and interesting.
  6.     Universe contains 100 billion galaxies that average 300 billion stars.
  7.     Planets are abundant in the cosmos, but Earth is extraordinary.
  8.     In 13.8 G yrs, cosmos grew from subatomic to 90 billion light-years wide.
  9.     Our universe is remarkably supportive of Life; science doesn’t know why.
  10.     Universe is expanding ever faster, driven by “dark energy”, but our galaxy, our Solar System, and we are not expanding.
  11.     Our universe may be the “Ultimate Free Lunch”, born from ~ nothing.
  12.     Universes might “evolve” to make more black holes and enable Life.
